An Intelligent System for Map Data Processing in Geographic Information Systems W. Feng University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 1304 W. Spring eld Avenue Urbana, IL 61801 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A geographic information system (GIS) allows users to collect, analyze, and manage a large amount of spatially referenced data. Our GIS incorporates computer graphics, image processing, database management, spatial modeling, and arti cial intelligence in order to integrate volumes of information from maps, graphs, and tabular data into a variety of formats and media. Such a system would be a valuable tool in a car | in particular, a rental car | where paper-based maps are often needed to reach one's destination.
